Reed Particle Boards are fully bio-based and biodegradable panels developed by designer Michelle Heising as part of the “Reed Cycle Community” project on Utö island, in Stockholm’s Archipelago. Reed absorbs excess phosphorus and nitrogen that cause eutrophication in the Baltic Sea, so harvesting it helps clean the water while providing a fast-growing resource. The boards are bonded with a biodegradable adhesive developed with the ECOHESIVES® team at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, using compounds from local fishing and food waste. A woven surface pattern improves water resistance. At the end of their life, the boards can be broken down to enrich the soil.
